I heard of these toys from a friend but didn't really think much about it. A little mechanical hamster that runs around and makes some noise, nah.... that's what I thought and I said to myself that I would never buy such a toy for my kids. Then I intended to buy some play doh or coloring books for my nieces who will visit us, and I saw these little guys on the shelf. I asked a sale's person, and he explained to me why this is popular and fun with kids, and somehow he convinced me that this would make a fun toy for 4 and 9 years old girls. So I decided to go for it.

Well, my nieces were very happy to hold them in their hands, find a small box to put them in with dish towel over them as a blanket, and then carry the box all around the house. And they even built a little house and entry way with magna tiles (which is my favorite toy anyway) to sleep in or hide in. I could see them nurturing and caring of a pet.

I realized that when you're a little kid, it is just great to have a toy that makes a little sound and scoot around in the living room, and just right size to hold it in your small hands... They might get bored of it having them for 6 months. But for the moment, this hamster is the best thing ever for my nieces. Great invention that has brought lots of smiles to my nieces. And also pure luck being at a store when they have them.

Even though I would recommend this product because it's so cute; I do have to say that I was a little shocked at the cheap plastic that makes the sleep hut (dome). The surf board looks and feels sturdy but the sleep hut (dome) I think is way too thin. You can easily bend the plastic. I could easily see my daughter pressing to hard to close the sleep hut and have it snap in her hands (potentially cutting her hand). I would think it would be thicker to stand up to a 5-year old. Zhu Zhu Pets Add On Ramp and Slide Right now

This is our second favorite add on accessory to the zhu-zhu fun house! It is a lot of fun to see the zhu-zhus go up the ramp, come down and keep on going! It is also very sturdy - we havent had to do any modifications on the ramp b/c it is built pretty good.. stays together, doesnt come apart or anything.

Someone mentioned that they had problems with the zhu-zhus getting stuck in the ramp.. let them go! They get "stuck" all the time, its on purpose..! Often times they'll get to the very top, stick their nose out and make little sounds for about 10 seconds or so, and come right back down the ramp and try it again! Its kinda cute.. it does this often - it'll stop going up the ramp for a few seconds, and either continue on or go sliding right on back down. We have never had any problems with the zhu-zhu becoming permanently stuck (well, unless you count two of the zhu-zhus trying to go up the ramp at the same time, then yeah.. these things dont share very good, do they?!)

I bought a Zhu Zhu but kept these too because I fugured she could use them together and, quite frankly, it wouldn't have been worth it to pay for shipping to send them back. Well, if you're not into the Zhu Zhu craze, these are OK. Zhu Zhu are much better though. Zhu Zhu's are slightly bigger than these so they do not work with the same toys. Zhu Zhu are also interactive. They know what part of their "house" they are in where these do not. Zhu Zhu's change directions when they bump into something. These are just like a wind up car: once it starts, it just goes. Zhu Zhu's have expandable add-on items meaning add-on houses you buy for them can be hooked together with other parts you may have. These play in the toy they come with and that's it. Both these and Zhu Zhu's have the hair issue. You must keep the hair away from it. That's probably why it's plastered all over them. It is hard to get the hair out because the mechanism is all encased. My daughter got several of these pets and the deluxe house for a Christmas present. She had no idea what they even were but as is the way with kids she liked the gift and has played with it somewhat. My husband came running with the screwdriver and I stood there holding the pet like a live hand granade lest one of the buttons get pushed and the wheels start sucking even more hair or worse pulling it all out. Once that was done we sat for 10 mins pulling/untangling all the sucked up hair. She still lost a bit, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
